Classification and regression are both supervised learning techniques, but they differ in the type of output they predict. Understanding this distinction is fundamental to choosing the right approach for your problem.

Classification predicts discrete categorical outcomes. The model assigns inputs to one of a predefined set of classes or categories. The output is a label that represents a category membership.

Examples of classification problems include email spam detection where the output is spam or not spam, medical diagnosis where the output might be disease present or absent, image recognition where the model identifies which of several categories an image belongs to, and sentiment analysis where text is classified as positive, negative, or neutral.

Classification can be binary with two classes or multi-class with more than two categories. Some algorithms also provide probability estimates for each class, not just the final prediction.

Regression predicts continuous numerical values. The model outputs a number that can take any value within a range, representing a quantity rather than a category.

Examples of regression problems include house price prediction based on features like size and location, temperature forecasting for weather applications, sales revenue estimation for business planning, and age estimation from facial images.

The key to deciding which approach to use lies in examining your target variable.

Ask yourself what type of value you need to predict. If the answer is a category or class membership, use classification. If the answer is a number on a continuous scale, use regression.

Consider whether the output values have a meaningful order and distance between them. Categories like red, green, and blue have no inherent order or distance, making them classification targets. House prices have both order and meaningful distances between values, making them regression targets.

Sometimes the same underlying problem can be framed either way. Predicting exact age is regression, but predicting age groups like child, adult, or senior is classification. Choose based on what is most useful for your application.

Common algorithms differ between the two. Logistic regression, despite its name, is used for classification. Linear regression is used for predicting continuous values. Decision trees and neural networks can handle both types with appropriate output layers.
