Image segmentation assigns a class label to every pixel. There are two main variants. Semantic segmentation labels each pixel with a class but does not distinguish between different instances of the same class. If two cars overlap in an image, semantic segmentation labels all car pixels identically. Instance segmentation additionally separates individual object instances, assigning unique identifiers to each car even when they overlap.
