Pickle is Python's built-in serialization module. It can serialize virtually any Python object, including scikit-learn models, custom classes, and complex data structures. The main advantage is simplicity. You call pickle.dump to save and pickle.load to restore. However, Pickle has significant limitations. It is Python-specific, so models cannot be loaded in other languages. Version compatibility issues arise when the Python version or library versions differ between training and deployment environments. Security is a concern because unpickling untrusted data can execute arbitrary code.

Joblib is optimized for objects containing large NumPy arrays, making it well-suited for scikit-learn models like random forests that store many numerical arrays internally. Joblib offers compression options that reduce file size and can be faster than Pickle for models with substantial numerical data. It uses the same underlying protocol as Pickle, so the same security and compatibility concerns apply. For scikit-learn models in production, Joblib is generally preferred over raw Pickle.

ONNX, the Open Neural Network Exchange, provides a framework-agnostic format for machine learning models.
