This is what statisticians call a confounding variable, and it is surprisingly common in business data.

Causation means that one variable directly influences another. If you increase the dosage of a medication and the patient's symptoms reliably decrease in a controlled setting, that suggests a causal relationship. Establishing causation requires controlled experiments, randomization, or sophisticated statistical techniques like instrumental variables or difference-in-differences analysis.

In business, I have seen this confusion lead to poor decisions. For example, a retail company noticed that customers who used their mobile app spent thirty percent more than customers who did not.
