Identity and Access Management, commonly known as IAM, is the framework that controls who can access what resources in your cloud environment. It is the cornerstone of cloud security and one of the first things you configure when setting up any cloud account.

IAM answers two fundamental questions. Authentication asks "who are you?" and verifies that a user or service is who they claim to be, typically through credentials like passwords, access keys, or multi-factor authentication tokens. Authorization asks "what are you allowed to do?" and determines which actions the authenticated entity can perform on which resources.

In AWS, IAM is a global service that manages users, groups, roles, and policies. Azure uses Microsoft Entra ID, formerly Azure Active Directory, for identity management combined with Azure Role-Based Access Control for authorization. GCP provides Cloud IAM with a similar model of users, service accounts, roles, and permissions.

The core components of IAM include users, which represent individual people or applications that need access. Groups organize users with similar access needs, making it easier to manage permissions at scale. Roles define a set of permissions that can be assumed by users, services, or applications. Policies are documents that explicitly define what actions are allowed or denied on specific resources.

IAM is critically important for several reasons. First, it enforces the principle of least privilege, ensuring that each user or service has only the minimum permissions needed to perform their job. This limits the blast radius if credentials are compromised. Second, IAM provides an audit trail. Every API call made using IAM credentials is logged in services like AWS CloudTrail, Azure Activity Log, or GCP Audit Logs, enabling you to track who did what and when. Third, IAM enables secure cross-service communication. Instead of embedding credentials in application code, services can assume IAM roles to securely access other cloud resources.

A practical example illustrates the importance of IAM. A developer needs to deploy code to an S3 bucket. Rather than giving them full administrator access to the entire AWS account, you create an IAM policy that allows only PutObject and GetObject actions on that specific S3 bucket. If their credentials are compromised, the attacker can only access that one bucket, not your databases, servers, or billing information.

As a junior cloud engineer, understanding IAM deeply is essential because misconfigurations in IAM are one of the most common causes of cloud security breaches.
