Encryption at rest and encryption in transit are two complementary security mechanisms that protect data in different states. Both are necessary because they address different threat vectors, and data is vulnerable in both states.

Encryption at rest protects stored data. This includes data on disk drives, in databases, in object storage like S3 buckets, and in backups. Without encryption at rest, anyone who gains physical access to the storage media or unauthorized logical access to the storage system can read the data in plain text. This applies to scenarios like a stolen or decommissioned hard drive, a backup tape that falls into the wrong hands, or an attacker who compromises storage-level access.

Cloud providers implement encryption at rest through several mechanisms. Server-side encryption automatically encrypts data before writing it to disk and decrypts it when reading. AWS S3, Azure Blob Storage, and GCP Cloud Storage all support server-side encryption with provider-managed keys, customer-managed keys through a Key Management Service, or customer-provided keys. AWS KMS, Azure Key Vault, and GCP Cloud KMS provide managed key management services where the provider handles the cryptographic operations and key storage while the customer controls key policies and access. For databases, services like AWS RDS, Azure SQL, and GCP Cloud SQL offer transparent data encryption that encrypts the underlying storage without requiring application changes.

Encryption in transit protects data as it moves between systems over a network. Without encryption in transit, an attacker who can intercept network traffic through techniques like man-in-the-middle attacks, packet sniffing, or compromised network equipment can read the data being transmitted.

TLS, Transport Layer Security, is the primary protocol for encryption in transit. When you access a service over HTTPS, TLS encrypts the entire communication channel. Cloud providers use TLS to protect traffic between customers and their services, between services within the provider's network, and between availability zones and regions. For custom applications, engineers configure TLS certificates on load balancers, API gateways, and application servers.

VPN connections and dedicated interconnects provide additional encryption for traffic between on-premises networks and the cloud. IPsec tunnels encrypt all traffic passing through VPN connections, protecting data even as it traverses the public internet.

Both types of encryption are necessary because they protect against different threats. Encryption at rest does not help if an attacker intercepts data in transit, and encryption in transit does not help if an attacker accesses stored data directly. Defense in depth requires protecting data in all states.

Most compliance frameworks including SOC 2, HIPAA, PCI DSS, and GDPR require both encryption at rest and in transit. Many cloud services now enable encryption by default, but engineers should verify encryption settings and ensure that customer-managed keys are used where regulatory or organizational policies require them.
