Event-driven architecture is a design pattern where components communicate by producing and consuming events rather than through direct synchronous calls. In cloud environments, this pattern enables loose coupling, independent scaling, and resilience, making it foundational for cloud-native applications.

The core concepts include events, which are immutable records of something that happened, producers that emit events, consumers that react to events, and event channels that transport events between producers and consumers. Events can represent state changes like order placed or user registered, commands requesting an action, or notifications informing other systems of activity.

Key patterns within event-driven architecture serve different purposes. Event notification is the simplest pattern where a producer publishes an event and interested consumers react. The producer does not know or care who consumes the event. This decouples systems effectively but can make it hard to trace the full flow of activity.

Event-carried state transfer includes enough data in the event for consumers to process it without calling back to the producer. This reduces coupling further and improves resilience since consumers can operate even if the producer is unavailable, but it increases event size and can lead to data duplication.

Event sourcing stores every change as an immutable event rather than overwriting current state. The current state is derived by replaying events. This provides a complete audit trail and enables temporal queries but adds complexity to querying and managing event stores.

Design for this explicitly and communicate it to users. Event ordering matters for some use cases. Ensure the messaging system preserves order where needed, typically through partition keys. Idempotency is essential because events may be delivered more than once. Consumers must handle duplicate events gracefully by designing idempotent handlers.

Error handling requires dead letter queues for events that cannot be processed. Implement retry strategies with backoff. Monitor failed event processing and alert on accumulating dead letters. Observability across event-driven systems requires correlation IDs that flow through events, enabling distributed tracing across asynchronous boundaries.

Schema evolution must be planned for from the start. Use schema registries to manage event formats and ensure backward compatibility as events evolve over time.
