CVE stands for Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures. It is a publicly available catalog of known security vulnerabilities, where each entry is assigned a unique identifier. The CVE system is maintained by MITRE Corporation and sponsored by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. A CVE identifier follows the format CVE-YEAR-NUMBER, such as CVE-2021-44228, which refers to the Log4Shell vulnerability discovered in 2021.

The CVE system is important for several reasons. First, it provides a standardized naming convention that allows security professionals, vendors, and researchers worldwide to reference the same vulnerability unambiguously. Before CVE existed, the same vulnerability might have different names in different tools, making communication and coordination difficult. Second, CVE entries serve as a foundation for vulnerability databases and security tools. When a vendor releases a security patch, they reference the CVE it addresses. When a scanner detects a vulnerability, it reports the associated CVE.

Each CVE entry contains essential information including a unique identifier, a brief description of the vulnerability, references to related advisories and patches, and the affected products or versions.
