Server fans draw this cool air through the front of the chassis, across the internal components, and exhaust the heated air out the back into the hot aisle. The hot air is then captured by the cooling system's return vents and directed back to the CRAC or CRAH units, where it is cooled and recirculated.

This arrangement is important because it prevents the mixing of hot exhaust air with cold supply air. Without this separation, hot air would recirculate back to the server intakes, forcing the cooling system to work much harder and leading to inconsistent temperatures across the data center floor. Some servers might overheat while others receive more cooling than they need.

Blanking panels are installed in any empty rack spaces to prevent cold air from bypassing the servers and flowing directly into the hot aisle.
