TCP and UDP are the two primary protocols at the Transport layer of the networking stack, and they serve fundamentally different purposes. Understanding when and why each is used is important for any data center technician because it affects how you troubleshoot connectivity issues and interpret network behavior.

TCP, or Transmission Control Protocol, is connection-oriented. Before any data is exchanged, TCP establishes a connection between the sender and receiver using a process called the three-way handshake. The sender sends a SYN packet, the receiver responds with a SYN-ACK, and the sender confirms with an ACK. Only after this handshake is complete does data transmission begin.

TCP guarantees reliable delivery. Every packet sent is acknowledged by the receiver. If a packet is lost or corrupted during transmission, TCP detects the problem and retransmits it. TCP also ensures that packets arrive in the correct order. If packets arrive out of sequence, TCP reorders them before delivering the data to the application. Additionally, TCP implements flow control, which prevents the sender from overwhelming the receiver by adjusting the rate of data transmission based on the receiver's capacity.

The trade-off for all this reliability is overhead. The handshake, acknowledgments, retransmissions, and ordering all require additional processing and bandwidth. This makes TCP slower than UDP, but it is the right choice when data integrity matters more than speed.

Common applications that use TCP include web browsing over HTTP and HTTPS on ports 80 and 443, email delivery using SMTP on port 25, file transfers using FTP on ports 20 and 21, and secure remote access using SSH on port 22. These applications cannot tolerate missing or corrupted data. A web page with missing packets would render incorrectly, and a file transfer with lost data would produce a corrupted file.

UDP, or User Datagram Protocol, is connectionless. There is no handshake, no acknowledgment, and no guarantee that packets arrive at all or in the correct order. The sender simply transmits data, and the receiver either gets it or does not. This makes UDP much faster and lighter than TCP because there is no overhead for connection setup or reliability mechanisms.

UDP is the right choice when speed matters more than perfect reliability, or when the application itself handles error correction. Common applications that use UDP include DNS queries on port 53, which are typically small and fast enough that retransmitting a lost query is cheaper than maintaining a TCP connection. Video streaming and voice over IP use UDP because a few dropped packets cause a barely noticeable glitch, whereas the delay caused by TCP retransmission would create unacceptable lag. DHCP on ports 67 and 68 uses UDP because the client does not yet have an IP address and cannot establish a TCP connection. Network monitoring using SNMP on port 161 also uses UDP for efficiency.

In a data center context, knowing whether a service uses TCP or UDP is critical for troubleshooting. If a web server is unreachable, you would check TCP connectivity on port 443. If DNS resolution is failing, you would check UDP connectivity on port 53. Firewall rules also distinguish between TCP and UDP, so a rule that allows TCP traffic on a port does not automatically allow UDP traffic on the same port.

One important detail is that some protocols use both TCP and UDP depending on the situation. DNS, for example, uses UDP for standard queries but switches to TCP for zone transfers or when a response is too large to fit in a single UDP packet. Understanding these nuances helps you diagnose issues more accurately.
