A Type 1 hypervisor, also called a bare-metal hypervisor, installs directly on the physical server hardware without requiring an underlying operating system. It has direct access to the hardware resources, including the CPU, memory, storage controllers, and network interfaces, and it manages the allocation of these resources to the virtual machines running on top of it. The most common Type 1 hypervisors in data center environments are VMware ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V when deployed in Server Core mode, and KVM, which is built into the Linux kernel.

A Type 2 hypervisor, also called a hosted hypervisor, runs as an application on top of a conventional operating system. The host operating system sits between the hypervisor and the hardware, which means that virtual machines must pass through an additional software layer to access hardware resources. Common Type 2 hypervisors include VMware Workstation, Oracle VirtualBox, and Parallels Desktop. Type 1 hypervisors are the standard for data centers for several important reasons. Performance is the most significant. This direct access provides near-native performance for virtual machines, which is critical when running production workloads that demand consistent and predictable performance.

Security is another major factor. A Type 1 hypervisor has a much smaller attack surface than a Type 2 hypervisor because there is no full operating system underneath it that could be exploited. VMware ESXi, for example, has a minimal footprint of only a few hundred megabytes, compared to a full Windows or Linux installation that includes thousands of services, libraries, and potential vulnerabilities.

Reliability and stability also favor Type 1 hypervisors. A host operating system in a Type 2 setup can crash, install updates that require reboots, or encounter driver conflicts, all of which affect every virtual machine running on top of it. A Type 1 hypervisor is purpose-built for running virtual machines and does not have these distractions.

As a data center technician, you will primarily work with Type 1 hypervisors.
