The conceptual data model provides a high-level overview of the business domain. It identifies the main entities and the relationships between them without any technical detail. A conceptual model for an e-commerce business might show that customers place orders, orders contain products, and products belong to categories. There are no columns, data types, or keys at this level. The audience is business stakeholders, product managers, and domain experts. The purpose is to establish shared understanding of what data the business cares about.

The logical data model adds detailed structure without tying to a specific technology. It defines entities with their attributes, primary keys, and foreign keys. Data types are specified in a general way, such as text, integer, or date, without platform-specific syntax. Relationships include cardinality: one-to-one, one-to-many, or many-to-many. Business rules are captured as constraints. A logical model for orders would show the order entity with attributes like order date, status, and total amount, linked to customer and order line item entities. The audience is data architects, analysts, and senior engineers. The purpose is to define what data is stored and how it relates.

The physical data model translates the logical model into implementation specifics for a chosen database platform. It specifies exact column names, platform-specific data types like VARCHAR(255) or BIGINT, indexes for query optimization, partitioning strategies, and storage parameters. Many-to-many relationships become junction tables. Performance considerations like denormalization are applied at this level. The audience is database administrators and data engineers who implement and maintain the schema.
