A data lake is a centralized repository that stores data in its raw, native format at any scale. Unlike a data warehouse, which requires data to be structured and transformed before loading, a data lake accepts structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data without predefined schemas. This schema-on-read approach provides flexibility for diverse use cases.

Building a data lake on cloud services starts with object storage as the foundation. Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, or Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 provide the scalable, durable, and cost-effective storage layer. Data arrives in whatever format the source produces, whether CSV, JSON, Parquet, Avro, images, or logs.

Organize the lake into zones that represent data maturity. The raw or bronze zone stores data exactly as received from sources, preserving fidelity. The cleaned or silver zone contains validated and standardized data with consistent schemas. The curated or gold zone holds business-ready datasets optimized for specific use cases. This medallion architecture brings order to what could otherwise become a data swamp.

Metadata and cataloging make the lake usable. AWS Glue Data Catalog, Google Data Catalog, or Azure Purview automatically discover schemas, track data lineage, and enable search across the lake. Without cataloging, users cannot find or understand the data they need.

Access control and governance ensure security. AWS Lake Formation, Google Dataplex, or Azure Purview provide fine-grained permissions at the table, column, and row level. Encryption at rest and in transit protects sensitive data. Audit logging tracks who accessed what.

Data lakes differ from data warehouses in several ways. Lakes store raw data in open formats; warehouses store transformed data in proprietary formats. Lakes support diverse workloads including analytics, machine learning, and streaming; warehouses focus on SQL analytics. Lakes use schema-on-read; warehouses use schema-on-write. Lakes are cheaper per gigabyte for storage but may require more processing at query time.

The lakehouse architecture combines both approaches, using open table formats like Delta Lake, Apache Iceberg, or Apache Hudi on top of object storage. These formats add ACID transactions, schema enforcement, and time travel to the data lake, bridging the gap between lake flexibility and warehouse reliability.
