The relationship is formal with organizational authority. Managers are accountable for their team's output and the development of each team member.

Technical leadership focuses on the quality and direction of technical work. Technical leaders set standards, make architectural decisions, guide technical choices, and ensure the team builds things the right way. This leadership often comes through expertise and influence rather than formal authority. People follow technical leaders because they trust their judgment, not because of organizational hierarchy.

The distinction matters because these roles require different skills.
