Understanding backup types is one of the most critical skills for a database administrator. The right combination of backup types determines how much data you could lose in a disaster and how quickly you can recover. Each type serves a different purpose and has different trade-offs in terms of storage space, backup speed, and recovery time.

A full backup captures the entire database at a point in time. It copies every data file, table, index, and system object. This is the most comprehensive backup type and serves as the foundation for all recovery scenarios. A full backup is self-contained, meaning you can restore the entire database from just this single backup. The downside is that full backups take the longest to create and require the most storage space. For a large database, a full backup might take hours and consume hundreds of gigabytes.

A differential backup captures only the data that has changed since the last full backup. If you took a full backup on Sunday and a differential backup on Wednesday, the Wednesday backup contains all changes made between Sunday and Wednesday. Differential backups are faster to create than full backups and use less storage, but they grow larger each day as more changes accumulate since the last full backup. To restore, you need the last full backup plus the most recent differential backup, which means recovery involves only two backup files.

An incremental backup captures only the data that has changed since the last backup of any type. If you take a full backup on Sunday, an incremental Monday captures Monday's changes, and an incremental Tuesday captures only Tuesday's changes. Incremental backups are the smallest and fastest to create. However, recovery requires the full backup plus every incremental backup in sequence. If any incremental backup is corrupted or missing, you cannot recover past that point.

Transaction log backups, sometimes called WAL archive backups in PostgreSQL, capture the stream of transactions written to the database's write-ahead log. These enable point-in-time recovery, meaning you can restore the database to any specific moment, not just to when a backup was taken. This is invaluable when you need to recover to the moment just before an accidental data deletion. Transaction log backups are typically small and fast, taken every 5 to 15 minutes.

A common backup strategy combines these types. Take a full backup weekly, differential backups daily, and transaction log backups every 15 minutes. This provides multiple recovery options: fast recovery from the most recent differential, or precise point-in-time recovery from the transaction logs. The exact schedule depends on your Recovery Point Objective, which defines the maximum acceptable data loss, and your Recovery Time Objective, which defines how quickly you must restore service.

As a junior DBA, always remember that a backup is only useful if it can be restored. Regularly test your backups by performing test restores to verify that the backup files are complete and the recovery process works as expected.
