Transparent Data Encryption, commonly referred to as TDE, is a technology that encrypts database files at the storage level, protecting data at rest without requiring changes to application code. It is called "transparent" because the encryption and decryption happen automatically as data is written to and read from disk, making the process invisible to applications and users.

TDE works by encrypting the database data files, log files, and backup files using a database encryption key (DEK). This DEK is itself protected by a certificate or asymmetric key stored in the master database (in SQL Server) or a wallet (in Oracle). The hierarchical key management ensures that even if someone steals the physical storage media or backup files, they cannot read the data without the proper encryption keys.

The importance of TDE lies primarily in compliance and data protection. Many regulatory frameworks such as GDPR, HIPAA, and PCI DSS require encryption of sensitive data at rest. TDE provides a straightforward way to meet these requirements. If a backup tape is lost or a hard drive is stolen, the encrypted data remains unreadable to unauthorized parties.

However, TDE has limitations that are important to understand. It only protects data at rest, not data in transit or data in memory. Once data is queried and sent to an application, it is no longer encrypted by TDE. Additionally, TDE can have a performance impact, typically around 3 to 5 percent for most workloads, because the CPU must handle encryption and decryption operations. Backup compression is also less effective on TDE-encrypted databases because encrypted data does not compress well.

Both SQL Server and Oracle support TDE natively in their enterprise editions. PostgreSQL does not have built-in TDE but offers filesystem-level encryption alternatives. When implementing TDE, it is critical to back up the encryption certificates separately and store them securely, because losing the certificate means losing access to the encrypted data permanently.

In practice, TDE is often the first encryption measure a DBA implements because it provides broad protection with minimal application changes. It should be complemented with column-level encryption for highly sensitive fields and TLS for data in transit to achieve comprehensive encryption coverage.
