Wait statistics are a fundamental diagnostic tool that tells you what a database server spends its time waiting on. Every time a worker thread in SQL Server cannot proceed immediately, it records a wait event with a type and duration. By analyzing the accumulation of these waits over time, you can identify the primary bottlenecks limiting your server performance.

The concept is straightforward: if a query needs data from disk but it is not in memory, the thread waits for the IO operation and records a PAGEIOLATCH wait. If a query needs to acquire a lock held by another transaction, it records an LCK_ wait. The aggregate of all these waits paints a picture of where the server is constrained.

IO-related waits are among the most common. PAGEIOLATCH_SH and PAGEIOLATCH_EX indicate the server is reading data pages from disk because they are not cached in the buffer pool. Consistently high values suggest either insufficient memory for the buffer pool or a workload that is too large to cache effectively. The fix might involve adding memory, optimizing queries to read fewer pages, or improving disk subsystem performance.

Lock waits such as LCK_M_S, LCK_M_X, and LCK_M_U indicate contention between concurrent transactions. High lock waits typically mean long-running transactions are holding locks that block other sessions. Solutions include optimizing transaction duration, using appropriate isolation levels such as read committed snapshot, or redesigning queries to reduce lock scope.

CXPACKET waits relate to parallelism. When a query runs in parallel, some threads finish before others and wait at exchange operators. While some CXPACKET waits are normal in healthy parallel execution, excessive values may indicate poor query plans, skewed data distribution, or a maxdop setting that is too high for the workload.

SOS_SCHEDULER_YIELD waits indicate CPU pressure. Threads are yielding their scheduler quantum because they have been running for too long. This suggests the workload demands more CPU than is available.

ASYNC_NETWORK_IO waits mean SQL Server is waiting for the client application to consume result sets. This often indicates the application is processing rows slowly or requesting more data than it needs.

To use wait statistics effectively, I take a baseline snapshot during normal operations and then compare it during performance issues. The difference shows you exactly what changed.
