I prioritize standards in three tiers based on their impact. The first tier covers standards that prevent incidents and data loss. These are mandatory and non-negotiable. They include backup and recovery procedures with verified restore testing, security standards for authentication, encryption, and access controls, change management procedures that prevent untested changes from reaching production, and high availability configuration standards ensuring every production database meets its SLA.

The second tier covers standards that improve operational efficiency. These include naming conventions for databases, schemas, tables, columns, indexes, and constraints. Consistent naming allows any DBA to navigate any database in the organization without referring to documentation.
