In Bash, the three types of quoting serve different purposes and behave very differently.

Single quotes preserve everything literally. Whatever you put inside single quotes will be treated exactly as written. No variable expansion, no command substitution, nothing special happens. For example, echo '$HOME' prints the literal text "$HOME" rather than your home directory path. Use single quotes when you want to protect special characters from interpretation.

Double quotes allow variable expansion and command substitution while still protecting most special characters. If you write echo "$HOME", it will print your actual home directory like "/home/username". Double quotes are your go-to choice when you need to include variables in your strings but still want spaces and most special characters treated normally.

Backticks perform command substitution. Whatever command you put inside backticks gets executed, and the output replaces the backtick expression. For example, echo "Today is `date`" will print the current date. However, backticks are considered older syntax. Modern Bash prefers the $(command) syntax because it is easier to nest and read.

Here is a practical example showing all three:

name="DevOps"
echo 'Hello $name'        # Prints: Hello $name
