Prometheus is an open-source monitoring and alerting system originally developed at SoundCloud. It has become the standard for metrics collection in cloud-native environments, particularly Kubernetes.

Prometheus stores all data as time series, which are streams of timestamped values identified by a metric name and a set of key-value pairs called labels. For example, a metric might be http_requests_total with labels for method, endpoint, and status code.

Prometheus uses a pull-based model to collect metrics. Instead of applications pushing data to a central server, Prometheus periodically scrapes HTTP endpoints that expose metrics in a specific format. Applications expose a metrics endpoint, typically at the path /metrics, and Prometheus fetches data from it at configured intervals.

The pull model has several advantages.

First, simpler application configuration. Applications do not need to know where to send metrics. They simply expose an endpoint, and Prometheus discovers and scrapes them. This makes it easier to add or remove monitoring without changing application code.

Second, easier debugging. You can manually access the metrics endpoint to see exactly what an application is exposing. This helps when troubleshooting missing or incorrect metrics.

Third, automatic health checking. If Prometheus cannot scrape a target, it knows that target is down. The scrape attempt itself serves as a health check.

Fourth, better control over load. Prometheus controls when and how often it fetches data. This prevents applications from overwhelming the monitoring system with a flood of metrics during incidents.

Fifth, service discovery integration. Prometheus integrates with Kubernetes, Consul, and other service discovery systems to automatically find new targets. When you deploy a new service, Prometheus discovers and starts scraping it without manual configuration.

The main component is the Prometheus server, which scrapes targets, stores time-series data, and evaluates alerting rules. Exporters are applications that expose metrics from third-party systems like databases or hardware. The Alertmanager handles alerts sent by Prometheus, managing deduplication, grouping, and routing to notification channels.
