Cloud providers offer multiple pricing models that trade flexibility for cost savings. Understanding each model and when to use it is essential for cost optimization.

On-demand instances charge by the hour or second with no long-term commitment. You pay the full listed price but can start or stop instances at any time. This model provides maximum flexibility but is the most expensive option per unit of compute.

Use on-demand for unpredictable workloads where you cannot forecast usage, short-term projects or experiments, applications with variable load that cannot use spot instances, and development and testing environments that run irregularly.

Reserved instances provide significant discounts, typically 30 to 72 percent compared to on-demand, in exchange for a commitment to use specific instance types for one or three years. You commit to a particular instance family, region, and operating system.

Use reserved instances for stable baseline workloads with predictable usage, production databases and core application servers, and any workload that runs consistently 24/7.

Savings plans offer similar discounts to reserved instances but with more flexibility. Instead of committing to specific instance types, you commit to a dollar amount of compute usage per hour. AWS offers Compute Savings Plans that apply across instance families, regions, and even services like Lambda and Fargate.

Use savings plans when you need flexibility to change instance types, want to simplify commitment management, and have a predictable baseline spend but variable resource mix.

Spot instances offer the deepest discounts, up to 90 percent off on-demand prices, but can be interrupted with short notice, typically two minutes, when the cloud provider needs the capacity back. Pricing fluctuates based on supply and demand.

Use spot instances for fault-tolerant and stateless workloads, batch processing and data analysis jobs, CI/CD build agents and testing, and any workload that can handle interruptions gracefully.

A well-optimized environment typically uses a mix of all models. Reserved instances or savings plans cover the stable baseline load. On-demand handles unexpected spikes. Spot instances run interruptible workloads at minimal cost.
