Pushback is not inherently negative. It can surface valid concerns, alternative perspectives, and potential issues I might have missed. My approach is to treat it as valuable input rather than opposition.

The first step is to listen and understand the root cause. I schedule a private conversation to understand their concerns without the pressure of a group setting. I ask questions like "Help me understand your concerns with this approach," "What would need to be different for you to feel comfortable with this?" and "Have you had negative experiences with similar tools or processes before?" Often, pushback stems from fear of the unknown, past negative experiences, or legitimate technical concerns.

The second step is to acknowledge valid points. If their concerns have merit, I acknowledge them openly. For example, "You raise a good point about the learning curve. Let me think about how we can address that." This builds trust and shows I value their input.

The third step is to share my reasoning with data. I explain the "why" behind the decision with concrete evidence, including the problem we are solving, alternatives considered and why this was chosen, and expected benefits with metrics where possible.

The fourth step is to find common ground. I look for compromises that address their concerns while achieving the goal. Options include piloting with a smaller scope first, providing additional training or documentation, or setting a review checkpoint in 30 days to evaluate together.

The fifth step is to escalate only when necessary. If we cannot reach agreement and the change is critical, I escalate to leadership with both perspectives presented fairly. I never go around someone without informing them.

As an example, a senior engineer resisted adopting Terraform, preferring manual CloudFormation. After listening, I learned he had bad experiences with Terraform state management.
