The CSS box model describes how every HTML element is represented as a rectangular box. Understanding it is fundamental to controlling layout and spacing in CSS.

The box model has four components, from inside to outside. First is the content area, which is where your actual content like text or images appears. The width and height properties control this area by default. Second is the padding, which is the space between the content and the border. Padding is transparent and takes on the element's background color. Third is the border, which surrounds the padding. It can have its own width, style, and color. Fourth is the margin, which is the space outside the border that separates the element from other elements. Margins are always transparent.

The total space an element takes up depends on how you calculate these values. By default, when you set width to one hundred pixels, that only applies to the content area. If you then add twenty pixels of padding and a five-pixel border, the total width becomes one hundred fifty pixels.

This is where the box-sizing property becomes important. With the default value of content-box, width and height only apply to the content area. Padding and border are added on top. With the value border-box, width and height include the content, padding, and border. This makes sizing much more intuitive.

Most developers prefer border-box because it is easier to reason about. If you set an element to three hundred pixels wide, it will actually be three hundred pixels wide, regardless of padding and border. A common practice is to apply box-sizing border-box to all elements using the universal selector.

Here is a practical example. If you have two elements side by side that should each take fifty percent of the container width, using content-box would cause them to overflow if they have any padding or border. With border-box, they will fit exactly as expected.
