This is an important distinction that many engineers conflate. Let me clarify the differences and when to use them together.

A Load Balancer operates primarily at Layer Four, the transport layer, or Layer Seven, the application layer. Its main job is distributing incoming traffic across multiple server instances to ensure no single server becomes overwhelmed. It makes routing decisions based on algorithms like Round Robin, Least Connections, or IP Hash. Load Balancers are focused on availability and performance through horizontal scaling.

An API Gateway, on the other hand, operates at the application layer and provides much richer functionality. It handles cross-cutting concerns like authentication and authorization, rate limiting and throttling, request and response transformation, API versioning, protocol translation such as REST to gRPC, request routing based on content, and API composition and aggregation.

In most production architectures, you would use both together, and here is why. The typical traffic flow looks like this: clients hit the API Gateway first, which handles all the application-level concerns I mentioned. The API Gateway then forwards requests to a Load Balancer, which distributes traffic across multiple instances of backend services.

For designing their interaction, I would structure it in three layers. The first layer is the external Load Balancer, which sits in front of multiple API Gateway instances for high availability. This ensures your gateway itself does not become a single point of failure. The second layer is the API Gateway cluster, which handles authentication, rate limiting, and routing logic. The third layer contains internal Load Balancers, one per microservice, distributing traffic across service instances.

A concrete example: imagine an e-commerce platform. External traffic hits an AWS Application Load Balancer, or ALB, which distributes requests across three API Gateway instances running Kong or AWS API Gateway. The gateway validates JWT tokens, enforces rate limits of one thousand requests per minute per user, and routes requests. If the request is for the product catalog, it goes to an internal ALB fronting five product service instances.

One key design consideration: where you implement health checks matters. The Load Balancer should do basic health checks on gateway instances. The API Gateway should do deeper health checks on backend services, potentially implementing circuit breaker patterns.
