An IP address is a unique numerical label assigned to every device connected to a network. It serves two main purposes: identifying the device and providing a location for sending and receiving data. Think of it like a mailing address for your computer. Without an IP address, devices on a network would have no way to find and communicate with each other.

The most common format is IPv4, which uses four groups of numbers separated by dots, such as 192.168.1.25. Each group ranges from 0 to 255. Alongside the IP address, every device also has a subnet mask, which defines which part of the address identifies the network and which part identifies the specific device. The default gateway is the IP address of the router that connects the local network to the internet or other networks.

A static IP address is one that is manually configured on the device and does not change unless someone deliberately modifies it. Static IPs are typically used for servers, printers, and other devices that need a consistent address so that other systems can always find them. For example, a network printer should always be at the same address so that every computer in the office can reliably send print jobs to it.

A dynamic IP address is automatically assigned by a DHCP server when a device connects to the network. Dynamic addresses can change over time, typically when the lease expires and the device requests a new address. Most workstations and user devices use dynamic IPs because it simplifies management. The IT team does not need to track and assign individual addresses for every laptop and phone in the office. The DHCP server handles it automatically and ensures there are no duplicate addresses.

As an IT support technician, understanding this difference matters for troubleshooting. If a user's computer has an address starting with 169.254, it means the device failed to reach the DHCP server and assigned itself a temporary address, known as an APIPA address. This is a strong indicator of a network connectivity issue between the device and the DHCP server, such as a disconnected cable, a disabled network adapter, or a DHCP server that is down.
