BIOS and UEFI are types of firmware stored on a chip on the motherboard. They are the very first software that runs when you press the power button, and their job is to initialize the hardware, run basic diagnostics, and hand control over to the operating system. Understanding how they work is fundamental for any IT support role because many hardware issues can be diagnosed or resolved through BIOS and UEFI settings.

BIOS stands for Basic Input Output System. It has been around since the early days of personal computing. When the computer powers on, the BIOS performs a process called POST, which stands for Power-On Self-Test. During POST, the BIOS checks that critical components like the CPU, RAM, and storage drives are present and functioning. If something fails, the system may display an error message on screen or produce a series of beep codes through the motherboard speaker to indicate what went wrong.

After POST completes successfully, the BIOS looks at its boot order configuration to determine which device to load the operating system from. This could be an internal hard drive, a USB drive, or even a network boot server. The BIOS then loads the boot loader from that device, which takes over and starts the operating system.

UEFI, which stands for Unified Extensible Firmware Interface, is the modern replacement for the traditional BIOS. It offers several advantages. UEFI provides a graphical interface that you can navigate with a mouse, whereas the old BIOS was text-only and required keyboard navigation. UEFI supports Secure Boot, a feature that prevents unauthorized or malicious software from loading during startup. It also supports drives larger than two terabytes using the GPT partition scheme, which the legacy BIOS could not handle natively.

You typically enter the setup screen by pressing a key like F2, Delete, or F12 during startup, though the exact key varies by manufacturer.
