The first step is Discovery. When a device, such as a laptop or phone, connects to the network, it does not yet have an IP address. It sends out a broadcast message called a DHCP Discover packet to the entire local network, essentially asking if there is a DHCP server available that can provide an address. This broadcast reaches all devices on the subnet, but only DHCP servers respond.

The second step is Offer. When a DHCP server receives the Discover message, it checks its pool of available IP addresses and reserves one for the requesting device. It then sends back a DHCP Offer message containing the proposed IP address along with additional configuration details like the subnet mask, default gateway, DNS server addresses, and the lease duration. If there are multiple DHCP servers on the network, the client may receive multiple offers.

The third step is Request. The client selects one of the offers it received, typically the first one, and sends a DHCP Request message back as a broadcast. This message tells all DHCP servers which offer was accepted. Any servers whose offers were not chosen will release the IP addresses they had reserved.

The fourth and final step is Acknowledgment. The chosen DHCP server confirms the assignment by sending a DHCP Acknowledgment, or DHCP ACK, to the client. At this point, the client officially has its IP address and network settings, and it can begin communicating on the network.
