OS imaging is the process of creating a preconfigured master copy of an operating system, complete with drivers, applications, settings, and security configurations, and then deploying that image to multiple computers. Instead of manually installing Windows and configuring each machine individually, which could take hours per device, you deploy the same standardized image to every workstation, ensuring consistency across the environment and dramatically reducing setup time.

The traditional approach to imaging involves several steps. First, you build a reference machine by installing Windows on a clean computer, applying all Windows updates, installing the standard applications the organization uses, configuring system settings and policies, and removing any unnecessary bloatware. This reference machine represents the ideal state of a workstation in your environment.

Next, you generalize the image using Sysprep, which is Microsoft's System Preparation tool. Sysprep removes machine-specific information like the computer name, security identifiers, and hardware-specific drivers, making the image portable to different hardware. Without running Sysprep, deploying the same image to multiple machines would create duplicate SIDs, causing serious issues with Active Directory and network authentication.

After Sysprep, you capture the image using a tool like the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit, known as MDT, or SCCM's imaging capabilities. In modern environments, Microsoft has introduced Windows Autopilot as a cloud-based alternative to traditional imaging. Instead of capturing and deploying custom images, Autopilot uses the stock Windows installation that comes on new hardware from the manufacturer. When a user turns on the new laptop and connects to the internet, Autopilot automatically applies the organization's settings, installs applications from Intune, joins the device to Azure AD, and enforces compliance policies. This approach eliminates the need to maintain and update custom images, which is a significant operational advantage, especially for remote workers who never come to the office to receive a traditionally imaged machine.

The best approach depends on the organization's size and infrastructure. Small organizations might use MDT with WDS for on-premises imaging. Mid-size organizations often use SCCM task sequences. Organizations heavily invested in Microsoft 365 and Intune increasingly prefer Autopilot for its simplicity and cloud-native approach.
