Windows provides several boot modes and recovery options designed to help technicians troubleshoot and resolve issues that prevent normal operation. Knowing which mode to use in each situation saves time and avoids unnecessary escalations.

Safe Mode is the most commonly used diagnostic boot option. It starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and services, disabling third-party software, non-essential drivers, and startup programs. This allows you to determine whether a problem is caused by a third-party driver or application versus a core Windows component. If the system works normally in Safe Mode but crashes during a regular boot, the issue is almost certainly caused by something that Safe Mode disables. You can access Safe Mode on Windows 10 and 11 by holding Shift while clicking Restart, then navigating to Troubleshoot, Advanced Options, Startup Settings, and selecting Safe Mode.

Safe Mode with Networking adds network drivers and services to the minimal Safe Mode environment. Use this when you need internet access or network connectivity to download a driver update, run a remote management tool, or access a network share during troubleshooting. Without this option, Safe Mode has no network access at all.

Safe Mode with Command Prompt starts Windows in Safe Mode but opens a command prompt instead of the graphical desktop.
