A physical server is a standalone piece of hardware with its own processor, memory, storage, and network interfaces, running a single operating system directly on the hardware. The hypervisor is a layer of software that sits between the physical hardware and the virtual machines, allocating hardware resources like CPU, RAM, and storage to each VM. Multiple virtual machines can run simultaneously on a single physical server, each with its own operating system and applications, completely isolated from one another.

The two most common hypervisors in enterprise environments are VMware ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V. VMware ESXi is a Type 1 hypervisor, meaning it runs directly on the bare metal hardware without an underlying operating system. Hyper-V can run as both a Type 1 hypervisor when installed as a dedicated role on Windows Server and as a Type 2 hypervisor when enabled as a feature on Windows desktop editions.
