To the servers connected to a SAN, the storage appears as locally attached disks, even though it is physically located in a separate storage array. SANs provide the highest performance and most flexibility. They support features like thin provisioning, snapshots, replication, and deduplication at the storage level. SANs are the preferred choice for enterprise environments running databases, virtualization platforms like VMware and Hyper-V where shared storage enables features like live migration and high availability clustering, and any workload that demands consistent low-latency storage performance. The trade-off is cost and complexity. SANs require specialized hardware, dedicated networking infrastructure, and skilled administrators to design and maintain.

In practice, many organizations use a combination. A SAN might serve the virtualization cluster and database servers, a NAS handles general file sharing and backups, and DAS provides local high-performance storage for specific workloads that do not need to be shared.
