Navigation patterns define how users move between screens in your mobile app. Choosing the right pattern is important because it affects discoverability, usability, and how naturally users can find what they are looking for. There are three primary navigation patterns used in mobile apps.

Stack navigation is the most fundamental pattern. It works like a stack of cards where each new screen is pushed on top of the previous one. Users go back by popping the top screen off the stack, revealing the screen underneath. This is the default navigation pattern for drill-down workflows. For example, a user taps a product in a list, which pushes the product detail screen onto the stack. From there, they might push a reviews screen. The back button or back swipe gesture pops screens off the stack in reverse order. Stack navigation is appropriate for linear flows and hierarchical content where each screen leads deeper into a specific topic.

Tab navigation uses a bar at the bottom of the screen (or top on some Android designs) with icons and labels representing the top-level sections of your app. Each tab maintains its own navigation state, so the user can switch between tabs without losing their position in any section. Tab navigation is ideal for apps with three to five equally important top-level destinations that users need to switch between frequently. Common examples include Home, Search, Notifications, and Profile tabs in social media apps. Avoid using more than five tabs because the icons become too small to tap reliably and the labels become difficult to read.

Drawer navigation uses a side panel that slides in from the left or right edge of the screen, typically triggered by a hamburger menu icon. Drawers can contain a longer list of navigation destinations than tabs, making them suitable for apps with many sections. However, drawers have lower discoverability because the options are hidden until the user opens the drawer. Material Design 3 has shifted away from drawers in favor of bottom navigation and navigation rails for primary navigation, relegating drawers to secondary navigation or settings.

These patterns are often combined. A typical app uses tab navigation for top-level sections, with stack navigation within each tab for drilling into content. A drawer might provide access to secondary items like settings, help, and account management.

In React Native, React Navigation provides createBottomTabNavigator, createNativeStackNavigator, and createDrawerNavigator. You nest navigators to combine patterns. In Flutter, the MaterialApp widget with routes and the GoRouter package handle navigation. Flutter provides BottomNavigationBar, NavigationRail for tablets, and Drawer widgets as built-in components.
