The need for platform channels arises because Flutter's Dart runtime does not have direct access to all platform-specific APIs. Examples include proprietary SDKs like payment processors or analytics tools, hardware-specific features like NFC readers or Bluetooth peripherals, platform-specific UI elements, and system services that Flutter does not wrap.

Flutter offers three types of platform channels. MethodChannel is the most common. It supports asynchronous method calls with named methods and structured arguments. The data types sent across the channel are automatically serialized and deserialized. Flutter uses the StandardMessageCodec, which handles null, booleans, integers, doubles, strings, byte arrays, lists, and maps. Complex objects need to be serialized into these primitive types, typically as maps.
