Provider is one of Flutter's most widely adopted state management solutions. It builds on top of InheritedWidget to offer a clean, declarative way to supply data down the widget tree without manually threading it through every constructor.

Without Provider, if a deeply nested widget needs access to a piece of data owned by an ancestor, you would have to pass that data as a constructor parameter through every intermediate widget. This is called prop drilling. It creates tight coupling between widgets that do not actually use the data and makes refactoring painful because changing the shape of shared data forces updates across many files.

Provider solves this by placing data into the widget tree at a chosen point, and any descendant can read it directly using context lookups. You wrap a subtree with a ChangeNotifierProvider, for example, and any child can call Provider.of or use the context.watch and context.read extensions to access the provided object. The framework takes care of rebuilding only the widgets that depend on the changed data.

There are several Provider types for different needs. Provider itself is the simplest and supplies a value without listening for changes. ChangeNotifierProvider pairs with a ChangeNotifier class whose notifyListeners method triggers rebuilds. FutureProvider and StreamProvider handle asynchronous data. ProxyProvider allows you to create a provider that depends on other providers, which is useful when services have dependencies on each other.

A practical example: imagine a shopping cart. You create a CartModel that extends ChangeNotifier, with methods like addItem and removeItem that call notifyListeners after mutating the internal list. You place a ChangeNotifierProvider for CartModel near the top of your app. The product listing screen reads the cart to show item counts, the cart screen displays full details, and the checkout screen calculates totals. None of these screens need to know about each other, and none of the intermediate navigation widgets carry cart references in their constructors.

Provider also encourages separation of concerns. Business logic lives in the model classes, UI lives in widgets, and Provider acts as the glue between them. This makes unit testing straightforward because you can instantiate the model in isolation and verify its behavior without rendering any widgets.

One limitation is that Provider is scoped to the widget tree. If you need state that outlives the widget lifecycle, you may pair Provider with a service locator or use Riverpod, which removes the dependency on BuildContext entirely. Despite this, Provider remains an excellent default choice for mid-level complexity applications due to its simplicity, strong community support, and official recommendation from the Flutter team.
