The threat model that certificate pinning addresses is significant. In a standard TLS connection, the app trusts any certificate signed by any CA in the device's trust store. An attacker who compromises a CA, installs a corporate proxy certificate, or tricks a user into installing a malicious profile can intercept and decrypt all HTTPS traffic. Include the pin for your current certificate and at least one backup certificate that you have generated but not yet deployed. This gives you a rotation path.

Pin updates require careful coordination between the mobile team, the backend team, and the infrastructure team. I recommend a rotation schedule where a new backup pin is added to the app well before the current certificate expires. When the certificate rotates, the current pin becomes the backup, and a new backup is generated. This rolling approach ensures continuity.

For debugging and development, certificate pinning must be disabled in debug builds. Developers and QA teams often use proxy tools like Charles or mitmproxy to inspect network traffic, which requires intercepting TLS connections. The app should only enforce pinning in release builds, and even then, some organizations maintain an internal build that bypasses pinning for security testing purposes.

I recommend implementing certificate pinning for any application that handles financial transactions, personal health data, authentication credentials, or other highly sensitive information. For applications with lower risk profiles, the operational overhead may outweigh the security benefit, especially if the backend uses short-lived certificates through services like Let's Encrypt. The decision should be documented in the security architecture and reviewed periodically.
