A VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) is a logical grouping of devices on a network that behave as if they are on the same physical LAN segment, regardless of their actual physical location. VLANs are configured on switches and allow network administrators to segment a network without needing separate physical infrastructure for each segment.

Without VLANs, every device connected to a switch is in the same broadcast domain, meaning a broadcast sent by one device reaches every other device. In a large network, this creates excessive broadcast traffic that wastes bandwidth and reduces performance. VLANs solve this by creating separate broadcast domains on the same physical switch.

There are several important reasons to use VLANs. First, they improve security by isolating sensitive traffic. For example, you can put the finance department in VLAN 10 and the engineering department in VLAN 20, preventing direct Layer 2 communication between them. Any traffic between VLANs must pass through a router or Layer 3 switch where access control lists can enforce security policies.

Second, VLANs reduce broadcast traffic. Each VLAN is its own broadcast domain, so a broadcast from a device in VLAN 10 only reaches other devices in VLAN 10, not devices in VLAN 20 or VLAN 30. This significantly improves performance in large networks.

Third, VLANs provide flexibility in network design. If an employee moves from one office to another, you can simply reassign their switch port to the appropriate VLAN rather than physically relocating them near their team's network equipment. This makes moves, adds, and changes much simpler.

Fourth, VLANs help with network management and troubleshooting. By logically organizing devices into groups (such as by department, function, or security level), it becomes easier to apply policies, monitor traffic, and isolate problems.

Each VLAN is identified by a VLAN ID number from 1 to 4094. VLAN 1 is the default VLAN on most switches, and all ports belong to it initially. VLANs 1002-1005 are reserved for legacy protocols. Best practice is to avoid using VLAN 1 for production traffic and instead create specific VLANs for each purpose.

Switch ports can be configured as access ports (belonging to a single VLAN) or trunk ports (carrying traffic for multiple VLANs between switches). Access ports are used for end devices like computers and printers, while trunk ports connect switches to each other or to routers.
