OSPF uses a hierarchical area design to scale efficiently in large networks. An area is a logical grouping of routers and networks that share a common link-state database. Dividing an OSPF network into multiple areas provides several important benefits that directly address the scalability limitations of a single-area design.

In a single-area OSPF network, every router maintains the complete link-state database for the entire network. Every time a link changes state, a new LSA is flooded to all routers, and every router must recalculate the SPF (Shortest Path First) algorithm. In a large network with hundreds of routers and thousands of links, this creates excessive CPU usage from frequent SPF calculations, large memory consumption for the link-state database, significant bandwidth consumption from LSA flooding, and slow convergence due to the size of the topology.

Multi-area OSPF solves these problems by containing LSA flooding and SPF calculations within each area. A topology change in Area 1 only triggers SPF recalculation for routers within Area 1. Routers in other areas receive only a summary of the change, not the detailed topology information. This dramatically reduces CPU, memory, and bandwidth requirements.

Area 0, the backbone area, is the central area to which all other areas must connect. This is a fundamental OSPF rule. Inter-area traffic always flows through Area 0, creating a predictable, star-like topology that prevents routing loops. All Area Border Routers (ABRs) must have at least one interface in Area 0. If a non-backbone area cannot physically connect to Area 0, a virtual link can be configured through a transit area to establish the logical connection.

Area Border Routers (ABRs) sit between areas and have interfaces in multiple areas. They maintain separate link-state databases for each area. ABRs summarize routing information from one area and inject it into another as Type 3 Summary LSAs. This is where route summarization can be configured to further reduce the routing information exchanged between areas.

Autonomous System Boundary Routers (ASBRs) connect the OSPF domain to external routing domains (like BGP or static routes) and inject external routes as Type 5 External LSAs.

When designing OSPF areas, follow these guidelines. Keep each area to roughly 50-200 routers maximum for optimal performance. Place the most stable links in Area 0 since backbone instability affects the entire OSPF domain. Summarize routes at ABRs to reduce inter-area routing information. Use contiguous IP address blocks within each area to enable clean summarization. Ensure Area 0 has redundant paths to prevent partitioning.

A typical enterprise OSPF design has Area 0 as the campus core and distribution layer, with separate areas for each building, floor, or department. Data centers often get their own area, as do WAN connections. This keeps the topology changes in one area from impacting the entire network.
