Statistical significance is a measure of how confident you can be that the difference you observe between test groups is real rather than due to random chance. In A/B testing, it tells you whether the improvement or decline you see in your metric is likely caused by the change you made rather than by natural variation in user behavior.

The standard threshold for statistical significance is a p-value of 0.05, which corresponds to 95 percent confidence. A p-value of 0.05 means there is a 5 percent probability that the observed difference occurred by chance alone, assuming there is no real difference between the groups. When the p-value is below 0.05, we say the result is statistically significant and we can act on it with reasonable confidence.

Why does this matter? Without statistical significance, you might implement a change based on random noise. Imagine you run a test and the treatment group has a 2 percent higher conversion rate. That sounds like a win. But if the sample size is small, that 2 percent difference might just be luck. You ship the change, and conversion goes back to normal or even declines. Statistical significance protects you from these false positives.

Confidence intervals complement the p-value by showing the range of plausible values for the true effect. If a test shows a 5 percent improvement with a 95 percent confidence interval of 2 to 8 percent, you can be fairly sure the real improvement is between 2 and 8 percent. If the interval is negative 1 to 11 percent, the result is not significant because the true effect might be zero or even negative.

There are important nuances PMs should understand. First, statistical significance does not mean practical significance. A statistically significant improvement of 0.1 percent might be real but too small to matter for the business. Always consider whether the magnitude of the effect is meaningful, not just whether it is statistically non-zero.

Second, the more tests you run, the more likely you are to get a false positive by chance alone. If you test 20 variations, one will appear significant at the 5 percent level even if none of them actually work. Correction methods like Bonferroni adjustment account for this multiple testing problem.

Third, a non-significant result does not prove there is no effect. It might mean the effect is smaller than your test was powered to detect, or that you need a larger sample size. A well-powered test that shows no significant difference provides useful information: the change probably does not have a large impact, which is still a valid learning.
