A product vision describes the aspirational future state that the product is working toward. It answers the question "where are we going and why does it matter?" A product strategy describes the approach and choices you will make to move toward that vision. It answers "how will we get there?" Both are essential, but they serve different purposes and operate at different levels of abstraction.

An effective product vision statement has several characteristics. It is inspiring and motivational, giving the team a sense of purpose beyond shipping features. It is customer-centric, describing the world from the user's perspective rather than from the company's. It is broad enough to last three to five years without needing revision, but specific enough to guide decisions. And it is memorable, something the team can recall and reference in daily work.

Consider the difference between "build the best project management tool" and "empower every team to do their best work together, regardless of where they sit." The first is product-centric and vague. The second paints a picture of the future state and the human impact, giving teams a North Star for every decision.

Product strategy, by contrast, is the set of choices about how to pursue the vision given current constraints and market conditions. Strategy includes decisions about which customer segments to target first, which problems to solve before others, what competitive positioning to adopt, and what capabilities to build. Strategy should be revisited quarterly or annually as conditions change, while the vision remains stable.

The relationship between them is hierarchical. The vision provides direction, the strategy defines the path, and the roadmap breaks the strategy into executable steps. Without a vision, the strategy lacks purpose. Without a strategy, the vision is just a dream. A PM needs to operate at both levels: inspiring the team with the vision while making pragmatic strategic choices about what to build next.

A practical approach to creating a product vision is to involve the team in the process. Run a workshop where you discuss the problems your product solves, the future you want to create for your users, and what success looks like in three to five years. Draft multiple versions, test them with the team for clarity and inspiration, and refine until you have something that resonates. Then validate it with executives to ensure alignment with the company's broader mission.

The best visions evolve naturally from deep customer understanding. If you have spent significant time with users and truly understand their aspirations and frustrations, the vision often writes itself.
