Without a career ladder, promotions feel arbitrary and retention suffers.

Structure the ladder around increasing scope, complexity, and impact. A common framework has four to six levels: Associate PM, PM, Senior PM, Staff or Principal PM, Director of Product, and VP of Product. Each level should represent a meaningful increase in the scope of problems tackled, the ambiguity of the challenges faced, and the breadth of influence exerted.

Define each level across consistent dimensions.
