The audience has deep context about the product and needs specific, actionable information to do their work. Communication is typically collaborative and bidirectional: you share context, gather input, and make decisions together. Formats include stand-ups, design reviews, PRDs, and Slack threads.

Executive-level communication is strategic, concise, and outcome-oriented. Executives are context-switching between multiple products, business functions, and strategic priorities. They need to understand the big picture quickly: where is the product headed, is it on track, what are the major risks, and what decisions do they need to make. They do not need to understand the implementation details, the sprint backlog, or the specific design choices. The skills required include audience empathy, meaning the ability to understand what different audiences care about and tailor your message accordingly; synthesis, meaning the ability to distill complex product decisions into their strategic essence without losing accuracy; storytelling, meaning the ability to construct a narrative that connects product work to business outcomes; and reading the room, meaning the ability to sense when executives want more detail versus when they want you to get to the point.

A practical technique is to prepare for executive meetings by asking yourself three questions: what is the one thing I need them to understand, what decision or action do I need from them, and what questions will they ask.
