The Page Object Model, commonly known as POM, is a design pattern that creates an abstraction layer between your test scripts and the UI elements they interact with. Each page or significant component in your application gets its own class or module that encapsulates the locators and actions for that page.

In a typical implementation, a Page Object contains the selectors for elements on the page and methods that represent user actions. For example, a LoginPage object might have properties for the username field, password field, and submit button, along with a login method that fills in credentials and clicks submit. Your test script then calls loginPage.login(username, password) rather than directly manipulating DOM elements.

The primary benefit is maintainability. When the UI changes, and it always does, you only need to update the selector or interaction logic in one place rather than hunting through dozens of test files. If a button's ID changes from submit-btn to login-submit, you update the LoginPage class once instead of every test that clicks that button.

Page Objects also improve readability. Tests read like user stories: loginPage.login(), dashboardPage.navigateToSettings(), settingsPage.updateProfile(). This makes tests understandable even to team members who are not deeply technical. Product managers and business analysts can review test scripts and verify that the right scenarios are covered.

Another advantage is reusability. Once you have built a Page Object for the checkout flow, every test that involves checkout uses the same methods. This reduces code duplication and ensures consistent interactions across your test suite. If the checkout flow adds a new required step, you add it to the Page Object and all tests automatically include it.

When implementing POM, follow a few key practices. Keep Page Objects focused on a single page or component. Do not include test assertions inside Page Objects; they should only contain element interactions and return data. Use method chaining where appropriate so actions flow naturally. Consider organizing Page Objects in a directory structure that mirrors your application's route structure.

Modern frameworks like Playwright even encourage a variation called the Fixture pattern, where Page Objects are injected into tests as fixtures. This provides better test isolation and makes setup and teardown cleaner. Cypress plugins like cypress-page-object provide similar functionality.

The Page Object Model is not the only abstraction pattern available. Some teams prefer the Screenplay pattern for more complex applications, where actions are modeled as tasks performed by actors. However, POM remains the most widely adopted pattern because of its simplicity and the balance it strikes between abstraction and practical usability.
