The test pyramid is a foundational concept in test architecture that was originally introduced by Mike Cohn. It provides a visual model for how to distribute automated tests across different levels of granularity, emphasizing that you should have many fast, low-level tests and fewer slow, high-level tests.

At the base of the pyramid are unit tests. These are the most numerous, fastest to execute, and cheapest to maintain. They test individual functions, methods, or classes in isolation, typically using mocking or stubbing for dependencies. A healthy codebase might have thousands of unit tests that run in seconds and provide immediate feedback to developers.

The middle layer consists of integration tests, sometimes called service tests or component tests. These verify that different modules or services work correctly together. They test the interactions between components, database queries, API contracts, and message queue behavior. They are slower than unit tests but catch issues that unit tests cannot, such as misconfigured connections or incompatible data formats.

At the top of the pyramid are end-to-end tests, also known as UI tests or system tests. These validate complete user workflows through the entire application stack. They are the slowest, most expensive to maintain, and most prone to flakiness. End-to-end tests are minimal, often limited to a handful of critical journey tests that validate the system works as a whole.

The key principle remains the same regardless of architecture: push testing as low as possible in the stack where feedback is fastest and maintenance cost is lowest.
