This could be a specific file hash, a known malicious IP address, a particular command-line string, or an exact sequence of bytes in network traffic. The strength of signature-based detection is precision. When you have a reliable indicator of compromise, a signature-based rule will match it with very high confidence and very low false positive rates. For example, if threat intelligence provides the SHA-256 hash of a specific malware dropper, a signature rule checking file hashes will reliably flag that exact file.

However, signature-based detection has a significant limitation: it only catches what you already know about. If an attacker modifies their malware by even a single byte, the file hash changes and the signature no longer matches. This makes signature-based detection reactive by nature. It excels at detecting known threats and known variants but struggles with novel attacks, zero-day exploits, and adversaries who actively modify their tools to evade detection.

Behavior-based detection takes a different approach. Instead of looking for specific artifacts, it looks for patterns of activity that indicate malicious intent regardless of the specific tools used. For example, rather than alerting on a specific PowerShell command string, a behavior-based rule might detect any process that downloads content from the internet and immediately executes it in memory. The behavior, download-and-execute, remains the same even when the attacker changes their tooling.

Behavior-based detection aligns well with frameworks like MITRE ATT&CK, which catalogs adversary techniques based on what they accomplish rather than the specific tools they use. Rules built around techniques like credential dumping, lateral movement via remote services, or data staging for exfiltration can catch multiple threat actors using different tools to achieve the same objectives.

The trade-off with behavior-based detection is that it typically generates more false positives. Legitimate system administration activities can look similar to attacker behaviors. A system administrator using PowerShell to remotely manage servers may trigger the same behavioral rule as an attacker performing lateral movement. This is why tuning is so important for behavior-based rules.

In practice, a mature detection program uses both approaches together in a layered strategy. Signature-based rules provide quick, high-confidence detections for known threats and serve as an efficient first line of defense. Behavior-based rules provide broader coverage that can catch novel and evolving threats. The combination gives you both depth against known adversaries and breadth against unknown ones.
