A Managed Security Service Provider, or MSSP, model outsources security monitoring and response to a third-party provider. MSSPs bring established processes, tooling, and experienced analysts from day one. They also provide round-the-clock coverage without the burden of shift scheduling. However, MSSP analysts typically monitor many clients simultaneously, which limits the depth of attention any single organization receives. The provider may not fully understand the customer's business context, leading to higher false positive rates or missed nuances. There is also an inherent latency in communication and escalation, which can slow down incident response during critical events.

The hybrid model combines elements of both approaches. An organization maintains a core internal team that handles escalations, threat hunting, and strategic decisions, while outsourcing tier-one monitoring and initial triage to an MSSP or co-managed provider. This model is increasingly popular because it balances cost efficiency with contextual expertise. The internal team retains ownership of critical decisions and sensitive investigations, while the external partner handles the volume of routine alerts. The challenge with a hybrid model is defining clear boundaries of responsibility. Without well-documented escalation procedures and service-level agreements, critical alerts can fall through the cracks between teams.
