Zero Trust assumes that threats exist both inside and outside the network and that every request must be authenticated, authorized, and encrypted regardless of its origin.

The core principles of Zero Trust include verifying explicitly by always authenticating and authorizing based on all available data points including user identity, location, device health, service or workload, data classification, and anomalies. Using least privilege access grants minimum permissions needed for a specific task, scoped to the specific resource and time needed. Assuming breach means designing as if the network is already compromised, minimizing blast radius through segmentation and detecting threats through analytics.

For network architecture, Zero Trust replaces the flat trusted network with microsegmentation. Instead of broad network zones, each workload or service has its own security boundary. Communication between services requires explicit authentication using mutual TLS, service mesh mTLS, or service identity tokens. Even services within the same data center or VPC must authenticate to each other. Network policies enforce that only explicitly allowed communication paths exist, and all traffic is encrypted in transit.

For identity and access management, Zero Trust requires strong identity verification for every access request. Users authenticate through multi-factor authentication. Applications and services authenticate through certificates or workload identity federation.
