Inter-service communication is the connective tissue of a microservices architecture. The choice of communication pattern significantly affects system reliability, performance, and coupling between services. There are two broad categories: synchronous request-response and asynchronous messaging.

Synchronous communication means the calling service sends a request and waits for a response. REST over HTTP is the most common implementation, offering simplicity, broad tooling support, and human-readable payloads. gRPC provides higher performance through binary Protocol Buffer serialization, HTTP/2 multiplexing, and strong typing with code generation. gRPC is preferred for internal service-to-service communication where performance matters and both sides are controlled by the same organization. Synchronous communication is appropriate when the caller needs an immediate response to proceed, such as querying a user service to validate authentication before processing a request.

Asynchronous messaging means the calling service sends a message and does not wait for a response. This can be implemented through message queues like SQS or RabbitMQ for point-to-point communication, or event streaming platforms like Kafka for publish-subscribe patterns. Asynchronous communication decouples services temporally: the sender can continue even if the receiver is temporarily unavailable. This improves resilience because a failure in one service does not cascade to the sender. It is appropriate when the sender does not need an immediate result, when you want to decouple service availability, or when one event needs to notify multiple consumers.

The choice between these patterns depends on several factors. Use synchronous communication when the calling service needs data from the response to continue its workflow and when latency requirements demand immediate answers. Use asynchronous messaging when the operation can be performed in the background, when you need to decouple service dependencies for resilience, when one event triggers actions in multiple downstream services, or when you need to buffer work to handle traffic spikes.

Most microservices architectures use both patterns. A request to create an order might synchronously validate the user and check inventory, then asynchronously publish an OrderCreated event that triggers payment processing, notification sending, and analytics recording. The synchronous path handles what the user needs to see immediately, while the asynchronous path handles everything that can happen in the background.

Regardless of the pattern chosen, implement resilience measures: timeouts and circuit breakers for synchronous calls, dead-letter queues and retry policies for asynchronous messaging, and idempotency for both to handle the inevitable duplicate deliveries in distributed systems.
