OLTP and OLAP represent two fundamentally different data access patterns that require different architectural approaches. Understanding these patterns is essential for making the right database and infrastructure choices.

Online Transaction Processing systems handle the day-to-day operational workload of an application. They process high volumes of short, atomic transactions like creating orders, updating inventory, and processing payments. OLTP queries typically access a small number of rows at a time using primary key lookups or indexed queries. The data model is highly normalized to minimize redundancy and ensure data integrity during concurrent writes. Latency requirements are strict, usually single-digit milliseconds for individual operations. OLTP databases use row-oriented storage, which is efficient for reading and writing complete records. Examples include PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, and DynamoDB for key-value transactional workloads.

Online Analytical Processing systems support complex queries for business intelligence, reporting, and data analysis. They handle fewer but much more complex queries that scan and aggregate millions or billions of rows across large time ranges. OLAP queries often involve group-by operations, aggregations like sum and average, joins across multiple dimension tables, and filtering across many columns. The data model is typically denormalized using star or snowflake schemas to optimize query performance. OLAP databases use columnar storage, which is dramatically more efficient for analytical queries because only the columns needed for the query are read from disk.
