Performance metrics are the quantitative measurements that tell you whether your system meets its performance requirements. Tracking the right metrics and understanding what they represent is fundamental to meaningful performance testing.

Response time is the most user-visible metric. It measures how long the system takes to respond to a request. I track several percentiles rather than just the average. The median or P50 shows typical user experience. The P90 shows what ninety percent of users experience. The P95 and P99 reveal the tail latency that affects a smaller but still significant portion of users. Averages can be misleading because a few extremely slow responses can hide behind a healthy average. If the average response time is two hundred milliseconds but P99 is five seconds, five percent of your users are having a terrible experience.

Throughput measures the number of requests the system processes per unit of time, usually expressed as requests per second or transactions per second. It tells you the system's capacity. During a load test, throughput should increase proportionally with load up to a point, after which it plateaus or drops. The point where throughput stops increasing indicates the system's maximum capacity under the current configuration.

Error rate tracks the percentage of requests that result in errors, whether HTTP 5xx errors, timeouts, or application-level failures. Under normal load, the error rate should be effectively zero. During stress tests, you observe at what load level errors begin to appear and how quickly they escalate. A sudden spike in errors often indicates a specific bottleneck has been hit, like database connection limits or memory exhaustion.

Concurrent users or virtual users is the count of simultaneous users the system is handling. This metric provides context for interpreting other metrics. Response times of five hundred milliseconds with one hundred concurrent users is very different from five hundred milliseconds with ten thousand concurrent users.

Resource utilization metrics from the server side complement the client-side metrics. CPU usage, memory consumption, disk I/O, and network bandwidth tell you how efficiently the system uses its resources. If CPU is at ninety-five percent during a load test, you know the system is compute-bound and adding more processing power would likely improve performance. If memory usage grows continuously, you might have a memory leak.

Connection pool metrics for databases and external services reveal integration bottlenecks. Active connections, wait time for a connection from the pool, and connection errors indicate whether the pool is sized correctly for the load.

I present these metrics together because they tell a story when correlated. If response time increases while throughput plateaus and CPU reaches its limit, the system is compute-bound. If response time increases while throughput drops and database connection wait time spikes, the database connection pool is the bottleneck. Understanding these relationships is what transforms raw numbers into actionable insights.
