Load testing evaluates how the system performs under expected user loads. You simulate the number of concurrent users and transaction rates that the application is designed to handle. For example, if your application serves ten thousand concurrent users during peak hours, a load test simulates that exact scenario. The goal is to verify that response times, throughput, and error rates remain within acceptable thresholds under normal operating conditions. Load tests are your baseline and should run regularly, ideally as part of your CI/CD pipeline.

Stress testing pushes the system beyond its designed capacity to find the breaking point. You gradually increase the load beyond expected levels to discover where the system degrades or fails. Stress testing reveals how the system behaves under extreme conditions, whether it degrades gracefully with slower response times or catastrophically with crashes and data loss. This information is critical for capacity planning and incident response preparation.

Spike testing is a variant of stress testing that applies a sudden, sharp increase in load rather than a gradual ramp-up.
